I remember him mostly from the early 70s version of his show. One of my favorite SCTV sketches is a hung-over Mr. Wizard teaching a bright-eyed kid about science.
Mr. Wizard: "You know why water boils, Jimmy?"
Jimmy: "No, why Mr. Wizard?"
Mr. Wizard: "Because it's hot!"
